Meun Films

Meun Films is a Production company focused on producing films and videos with a counter-narrative lens. Counter-Narratives are stories that oppose the dominant stories about Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), and the dominant ways of telling those stories. These dominant narratives could include everything from stereotypes of the dangerous black man or the docile asian woman, to means of production that exclude BIPOC's voices in the decision-making room. Meun Films brings a new way of thinking to film and video production that aims to reverse and correct the way we view BIPOC in media.

Meun:

The wolof word meaning ability or capability, over a challenge or challenger.

Traveler, PhD Student, Documentary Filmmaker and Counter Narrative Storyteller with a Masters in Journalism

I was born in the United States to Senegalese parents. From a young age I was exposed to the cultural differences and nuances between Senegal and the United States. This allowed me to see first hand, how inaccurate the media representations of Black and Indigenous People of Color are. This has been the basis of my studies and my filmmaking.

As a PhD student in Communications, Information and Media I have been researching and writing about why we've been portrayed the ways we have been historically. Specifically my research centers around colonial media's dominant narratives, their effects on the representation of the formerly colonized, and how counter narratives can be utilized to restore veracity to our global representations.

As a documentary filmmaker I travel the world to create new and more accurate ways of portraying Black and Indigenous People of color, using counter-narrative storytelling techniques.
